An article in the Teachers’ Encyclopaedia 1912 poses the question- Should college teachers be trained?
Albert Einstein (1879-1955) once observed:
“I never teach my pupils, I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn.”
A couple of years ago, Thomas Ehrlich, a former president of Indiana University, Provost of Penn, and dean of Stanford Law School co- authored an article with Ernestine Fu in the Forbes website, entitled ‘College Professors: Before You Teach, Learn How!’
The article begins: A dirty little secret of higher education is that faculty members at most American colleges and universities have never taken a course on how to teach.
targetpostgrad.com of UK is a comprehensive postgraduate course website.
A post in the website on ‘Training to teach in further and higher education’ reads:
It is possible to gain a lecturing job without a teaching qualification, but your prospects of gaining a position and of progression once in the sector are likely to be greatly enhanced by possessing an appropriate qualification.
You can take qualifications at various levels:
*Level 3 Award in Education and Training: a short introductory course including peer-to-peer teaching practice, which you can take without the need to have a placement or be employed as a teacher.
*Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training: develops practical teaching skills and includes a minimum of 30 hours of teaching practice.
*Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training: training for a full teaching role which includes educational theory and a minimum of 100 hours of teaching practice.
The Department of Education of the University of Calicut was set up in 1974. Interestingly enough, they introduced the Master of College Teaching programme under the leadership of Prof. Dr.K.Soman. This incidentally was the first venture of its kind in India. A few years later the UGC Academic Staff Colleges set up in different universities commenced offering both Orientation Courses and Refresher Courses for college teachers.
